What 4X means. On a felt hat the X rating describes the quality of the blend. The Sonora is a 4X premium wool felt — not fur felt — which keeps it accessible while still holding a clean shape. Straw hats use the X letter for something different, where it measures how fine and tight the weave is, so the numbers don't compare across materials.
