How to Clean a Felt Cowboy Hat: Stetson's Official Care Rules
Share
A good felt hat is an investment — a well-kept 6X lasts decades, and a 30X will outlive you. But felt has its rules, and most hats don't die of old age: they die from heat, from badly dried rain, and from the wrong cleaning products. Here's what Stetson itself says, straight from its official care documentation.
The Basic Routine: Brushing (the Stetson Way)
- Use a soft-bristled brush — horsehair is ideal.
- Start at the left side of the hat and brush counter-clockwise. Felt fibers are oriented that way at the factory, and brushing against them stresses the felt.
- Short, consistent strokes, sweeping dust toward the back.
- How often: a quick brush after heavy wear, or at least once a month.
Stains: No Liquids. Ever.
- Stetson is blunt about this: no liquid cleaners and no sprays — they can ruin the felt.
- Water or grease spots on light-colored hats: sprinkle baby talc or cornstarch on the spot, let it absorb, then brush it off.
- Light marks: a hat sponge (they come in pairs — one for light hats, one for dark) in gentle circles, or a suede eraser without rubbing hard.
Got Caught in the Rain? Stetson's Official Protocol
- Shake off the excess water.
- Turn down the leather sweatband so it can breathe.
- Let the hat dry naturally, resting on its crown, with the brim touching nothing.
- Never near heat — heat can reactivate the felting process and shrink your hat.
Enemy #1: Heat
Straight from Stetson: keep your hat away from stoves, radiators, lamps, car windows, and enclosed cars in the summer. Heat combined with perspiration shrinks the sweatband. Here in Dallas, the car in August is the silent killer of texanas — don't leave your hat in it.
Storage and Daily Handling
- Store it upside down on its crown, on a clean surface or in a hat box — never resting on the brim, or the brim flattens out.
- To put it on or take it off, hold the brim at the front and back — not the crown. Constant crown-handling deforms the crease and works oil into the felt.
- Every so often, turn down the sweatband so perspiration can dry out.
When It Needs More Than a Brush: Our Felt Hat Service
At Teres we offer professional cleaning and shaping for felt hats — any felt hat, no matter where you bought it. We'll get it clean and put the crease back exactly the way you like it. (Felt only — straw and palm hats can't take this process because of the material.)
And here's the best part: buy your felt hat at Teres and the first custom shaping is free — you walk out with the crease you want, done on the spot. After that, cleanings and re-shapings are available for a fee, for your hats and anyone else's.
