A Mexican-style cowboy hat is not really bought — it is shaped. The same RDR Sinaloa Patrón can leave our store looking like three different hats depending on the horma (the shape) the customer asks for. If you have heard people ask for "horma Sinaloa" or "Marlboro" and never knew what they meant, this is the guide. What a "horma" actually is
In Spanish-speaking western wear, horma means the finished shape of the hat, made of two parts:
- The crown (copa): how tall it is, how it is creased on top and how deep the side dents (pinches) go. This is what people notice first.
- The brim (ala or falda): how much it curls up on the sides and how much it dips at the front and back.
Most hats arrive from the factory with a basic crease. The hatter then softens the hat with steam and works the crown and brim by hand into the horma you asked for. A good horma is symmetrical, holds its shape and suits your face — that last part is why it is worth doing in person.

Sinaloa / Patrón
The signature look of regional Mexican music. A tall crown with a deep center crease and pronounced side pinches, and a brim that curls up on the sides with a dip at the front. On our wall it is the RDR Sinaloa Patrón in 4X, 6X and 10X felt (from $109.99); in straw, the Tombstone Chaparral comes from the factory with the same idea and a lower crown.
Marlboro (also called Cattleman)
The sober one. Three creases along the top of the crown, less dramatic side dents and an even, gentle brim curl. It is the classic ranch shape on both sides of the border and the easiest horma to wear every day. On our wall: RDR Marlboro 4X in black, silver gray, pecan, bone, navy and wine (from $109.99). Most Stetson and Resistol felts also come in a cattleman crease.
Open Crown (copa abierta)
No crease at all: a smooth, rounded crown and a wide, flat brim. Some customers wear it exactly like that. For everyone else it is the blank canvas — an open crown is the felt you buy when you want a specific horma built from scratch. On our wall: RDR Open Crown 4X and 6X in black, charcoal and pecan (from $119.99), with 4 1/4" to 4 1/2" brims.
Johnson
A tall, upright crown — the shape made famous by "El Fantasma" — on a Mexican handwoven palm hat. Straw hats come from the factory already in their horma, so with a Johnson you are choosing the shape when you choose the hat. Chaparral
Tombstone's lower-crown cut, closer to the Sinaloa line, in the same palm. On our wall: Tombstone Chaparral in 1000X ($79.99) and 30X ($189.99). Together with the Johnson it is the straw pair most of our regional customers choose between.
Other names you will hear
Chihuahua or Duranguense (a taller, squarer crown), Sonora, Texas, Roper, "el Viejón"… The names change from region to region and even from hatter to hatter, so two people asking for a "horma Chihuahua" may mean two different things. That is why we always ask for a photo or a reference — and why a photo beats a name every time.

How a cowboy hat is shaped
- Steam. The crown and brim are held over steam a few seconds at a time until the felt (or the straw) softens. Too much steam spots felt and warps straw; this is where most home attempts go wrong.
- The crown. The hatter sets the center crease first, then the side pinches with the thumbs, checking from the front that both sides match. Height and depth are adjusted here.
- The brim. The sides are rolled up over a curved form or by hand, then the front and back are dipped to the angle you want. The curl is checked from the front and from above.
- Set. The hat cools and dries in the new shape. Felt "remembers" it; straw is lighter and needs a lighter touch.
Can you do it at home? A little — a kettle and patience will tweak a brim. But a full horma on a $200 felt is not the place to learn: water spots and an uneven crown are the usual results. It takes us a few minutes at the counter.
Felt vs straw
A felt hat can be reshaped many times over its life; that is one of the things you are paying for in a good felt, and we reshape felts without any trouble. A straw or palm hat can be steamed too, but the weave has much less give. As a rule we do not reshape straw hats: we sell them in their factory horma, and our wall has several to choose from. Which horma fits your face?
- Round or wide face: a taller crown and a wider brim balance it — Sinaloa or Johnson.
- Long or narrow face: a lower crown and a moderate brim — Marlboro or Chaparral.
- Shorter build: avoid the widest brims; they shorten you further.
- Tall build: you can carry a wide brim and a tall crown with no trouble.

- Shaping is included when you buy your hat — change it as many times as you want before you walk out. Cleaning, reshaping on a later visit, or a felt bought elsewhere have a fee — ask at the counter. If we are busy you can leave it and pick it up.
- Straw and palm hats: as a rule we don't reshape them; they are sold in their factory horma.

Quick answers
How do I know which horma I am? You are not a horma — your face and your use are. Try two or three on with us; the mirror decides faster than any chart.
Can the horma be changed later? On felt, yes, as many times as you like — included the day you buy the hat, for a fee on a later visit. On straw, as a rule we don't — choose the shape you want when you buy it.
Does the horma change the size? No. Size is the sweatband circumference and stays the same. Shaping only changes the crown and brim.
Are there hormas for women? The same shapes work for everyone; women often prefer a lower crown and a slightly wider, flatter brim, but there is no rule. Try them on.
What does 100X mean? It is the felt or straw quality grade, not a shape — and it means different things in different brands. See what the X's really mean.
