What 3X means. On a felt hat the X rating describes the quality of the blend. The Tucker is a 3X wool felt — not fur felt — which keeps it accessible while still holding a clean shape. Straw hats use the X letter for something different, where it measures how fine and tight the weave is, so the numbers don't compare across materials.
