The Superior is Larry Mahan's 500X fur felt western hat in black, made in the U.S.A. It is the top of the Larry Mahan Hat Collection, named for the six-time World All-Around Rodeo Champion.
What 500X means. On a felt hat the X rating describes the quality of the blend, and 500X is beaver fur felt at the highest end of the scale — it keeps a subtle sheen, a soft hand and holds its shape for years. Straw hats use the X letter for something different, where it measures how fine and tight the weave is, so the numbers don't compare across materials.
Shape 65-65-21: a 4 1/2" cattleman crown with a 4" brim, a self band with a four-piece buckle set in gold, silver and bronze, a cowhide leather sweatband and satin crown lining.
