Charcoal is the grey for people who want the weight of black without the severity of it. It reads softer in daylight and pairs with brown leather as easily as with black, which black itself does not always manage. Next to the silver gray in this same line it is noticeably deeper — closer to charcoal from a pencil than to a true silver.
This is the 4X grade, the entry point of the line and the practical one. It costs a fraction of the fur felt grades, which makes it the sensible choice for a first shaped hat or for a second hat you are not precious about. The brim measures 4 3/8 inches, wide enough for real shade without the drama of a five-inch brim.
