Genuine caiman hornback in black — the accessible entry into hornback, with the same dramatic ridged texture found on pairs costing considerably more. Hornback is the spine section of the caiman, where raised bony scales run in a defined row down the animal's back. It's the most striking cut of any exotic hide, and in black the ridges read as pure texture and shadow rather than competing with color.

Hornback carries a premium because of what it takes to produce: only a narrow strip of each hide qualifies, and the ridged spine has to be worked without flattening the scales that make it worth using.

The black finish keeps the focus entirely on the raised ridge pattern, which is why black hornback reads dressier than brown — it works with a suit as easily as with jeans. This is Tanner Mark's Black Label construction: the leather outsole is set with lemon wood pegs and brass tacks rather than glued, a steel shank runs through the arch for support, and a three-quarter double-stitched welt joins upper to sole. The shaft is lined in calfskin, the heel is stacked leather, and the insole is comfort cushioned — which means any bootmaker can resole them years from now.

Scale size, ridge height, and pattern vary from pair to pair — that variation is the signature of genuine hornback and the reason no two pairs are alike.
