Tanner Mark Caiman Hornback Black Kabul Top - TMX100158
Caiman hornback is the boldest cut of the hide, and in black it reads sharp instead of loud. The raised ridges running down the center of the vamp are the animal's dorsal crest — sculpted, three-dimensional, and impossible to fake. Flanking them are rows of squared scales that graduate in size toward the edges. It's the cut people recognize across a room.
Hornback commands its premium because the crest has to be cut, aligned and worked by hand so the ridges run true and mirror each other on both boots. A single hide yields very little usable back, and matching a pair takes considerably more skill than working a flat section. The ridges soften with wear but never flatten out.
The black finish keeps the ridge geometry as the focal point rather than the color. A Kabul-tone top gives the shaft warmth above the exotic foot, finished with traditional Western stitching.
How these are built. This is Tanner Mark's Black Label construction: the leather outsole is set with lemon wood pegs and brass tacks rather than glued, a steel shank runs through the arch for support, and a three-quarter double-stitched welt joins upper to sole. The shaft is lined in calfskin, the heel is stacked leather, and the insole is comfort cushioned. At this level you're buying a boot to rebuild, not to replace — any bootmaker can resole them.
Ridge height, scale size and pattern vary from pair to pair; that variation confirms the hide is genuine.
