What 6X means. On a felt hat the X rating describes the quality of the fur blend rather than the weave. A 6X is a genuine fur felt — not wool — which is what separates a hat that holds its shape through weather and breaks in to your head from one that stays stiff or goes soft after a season. Straw hats use the same X letter for something else entirely, where it measures how fine and tight the weave is, so the numbers don't compare across materials.
